Start your laser hair removal journey today!

As we transition into winter, the daylight hours dwindle, and so does our time spent outside in the sun. For some, winter is a welcome change, but for those of you who call Wellington home, you’re likely still clutching on to those last rays of sunshine. There is a bright side to the loss of warm weather – with the departure of summer comes the opportune time to start your laser hair removal journey at Buoy Spa.

Laser Hair Removal 101 – all you need to know...

Timing is everything

We recommend starting your IPL hair removal treatments around the cusp of Autumn and Winter when your skin’s sun exposure is drastically reduced. The laser light used in hair removal can have trouble distinguishing between the skin and hair in areas where the skin has been tanned, so it works most effectively on areas that have not been exposed to the sun. Another key reason to start laser hair removal in winter is due to the hair growth cycle. It is typical for hair growth cycles to slow in the winter months, allowing for a larger percentage of hair to be in the active growth phase during treatment time.

Not all lasers (or technicians) are created equal

At Buoy Spa, our beauty therapists are fully qualified laser technicians. We use state-of-the-art Cutera laser technology – the premium laser tool to combat unwanted hair for a wide range of hair and skin types. The Cutera laser has a unique design which delivers safe and permanent results while the handpiece simultaneously cools and soothes the skin. The process is quick with minimal pain, depending on the area treated. Light energy can target hundreds of hair follicles within seconds, saving you precious time, whereas other outdated methods can take hours.

How many treatments will I need?

It's common for most areas to require multiple laser treatments. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on your hair thickness, the specific area you wish to target and your hair’s growth cycle. Cutera laser treatments target and stunt the hairs in their active growth phase. Long-term hair-free results are achieved by committing to a series of treatments to ensure that all hair follicles can be targeted in their active growth phase.

Resist the urge to tweeze

We recommend that you avoid waxing and plucking in between treatments. However, shaving is fine and won’t interfere with progress.

We’re all familiar with the expression ‘summer bodies are made in winter’, and the same applies to laser treatments. It can take several months to achieve optimal hair-free results, with treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. However, starting the laser hair removal process in winter ensures that your skin is beautifully smooth and hair-free for when the warmer weather arrives, and you’re ready to bare more skin.
