Everything you need to know about anti-wrinkle injections

There are many internal and external factors that influence the health and appearance of your skin. Genetics, diet, skincare, hydration, and general skin maintenance can all play a role in impacting the overall quality of your skin.

Using active skincare alongside regular facial treatments can be wonderful for skin maintenance, but sometimes it takes more than drinking water and using the right products to get the results you’d like.

Anti-wrinkle injections are a safe, quick, and effective way to help you achieve an enhanced and youthful appearance in a more immediate way.

Before you begin your injectable journey at Buoy, check out our guide of commonly asked questions below to help you decide.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

Lines and wrinkles are caused by the repetitive contraction of facial muscles. Anti-wrinkle injections work to prevent the formation of static wrinkles by stopping the signal between the nerve and the muscle.

When there is a decrease in muscle movement, there is less tension on the skin’s surface. Reduced skin tension helps maintain a more youthful and fresh appearance. Using anti-wrinkle injections at the earliest sight of lines can slow the progression and formation of more permanent and deep-set wrinkles.

Why choose injectables to maintain a youthful appearance?

When applied by a certified professional, injectables are a gentle, non-surgical, and natural-looking way to dramatically smooth the skin's surface and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Injectables were once only discussed behind closed doors. However, with over 2.5 million injectable procedures carried out every year since 2015, they are now considered a less taboo way to reduce bothersome lines.

The results speak for themselves. After an anti-wrinkle injection, you can expect smooth and rejuvenated skin that will leave you looking and feeling more confident and youthful.

At Buoy we use Dysport

Dysport, like Botox, is classified as a ‘neuromodulator’. Injectables are split into two categories – neuromodulators and soft-tissue fillers. Soft-tissue fillers work by increasing lost volume in areas like the cheeks, chin, forehead, and lips.

Anti-wrinkle injectables like Dysport and Botox are most effective when targeted on dynamic lines. A dynamic line is a line that appears when your face is making an expression, such as a frown or eyebrow raise. Dynamic lines become harder to treat over time once they have become more visible on a resting face. However, using injectables such as Dysport can certainly soften any deep-set lines.  Dysport provides rapid results with minimum downtime.

What is the difference between Dysport and Botox?

Where Dysport and Botox differ is the molecular behaviour and diffusion. With just a few injections, Dysport spreads fast and works well over a large surface area, such as the forehead. Dysport is just as effective as Botox but comes in a more diluted formula, and for this reason, more units may be needed. However, the price per unit is less than Botox, resulting in a similar price point overall.

Our certified nurse Sarah’s preferred product is Dysport and the product is administered the same way that Botox is – injected into your targeted area. You can expect to experience minimal discomfort and quickly resume your regular schedule post-treatment.

A benefit of Dysport is the speed at which it works. Most patients report seeing results in as little as two days instead of four + days with Botox. You can expect Dysport to last for a similar duration to Botox – about four months.

 Where can I use Dysport?

Anti-wrinkle injections are ideal for the following areas of concern:

  • Forehead lines
  • Furrowed brows (the lines between the eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (wrinkles at the corners of the eyes)
  • Bunny lines (the lines on the sides of the nose)
  • Eyebrows
  • Frown lines
  • Smile lines or laugh lines
  • Corners of the mouth

How long does it take for Dysport to work?

It usually only takes 2-5 days to start seeing the effects of Dysport.

However, it may take up to two weeks for some patients to see the final result.

At Buoy, we offer you a complimentary 2-week post-treatment follow up to ensure you are delighted with your results.

When should I start getting anti-wrinkle injections?

It’s perfectly normal for people to start using anti-wrinkle injections when they first start to notice lines, and for some, this may happen as early as their 20s. If treated early, some can expect great results within just a few sessions.

Anti-wrinkle injections are tailored to your individual needs, and for this reason, they remain a popular solution for people of all ages ranging from their mid-20s and above.

Ultimately, It’s about personal preference. We recommend that you book a consultation with Sarah, our experienced in-house nurse, to discuss your concerns.

How much Dysport do I need?

It depends on the area that you wish to target. We’ve provided a rough guideline of average cost per area below, but please note that individual needs vary. We recommend an in-person consultation with our nurse Sarah to assess your needs and prescribed dose properly.

Average cost per area treated:

Frown / Glabella – from $350

Forehead lines – from $230

Eyes / Crows feet – from $200

Lip flip – from $80

Hyperhidrosis / Armpits – from $950

How often should I get Dysport?

Like any medical intervention, results can vary from person to person, depending on their biological response. Typically, you can expect your results to last anywhere between 3-4 months from the injection date.

Over time the body metabolises the Dysport injection, leading to the slow return of muscle movement in the treated areas. Experts recommend you wait at least 90 days (three months) between treatments to allow the neurotoxin to work its way out of your body completely.

Maintaining healthy skincare habits, using sun protection, and anti-ageing products are great ways to enhance and extend your results. One of our skin specialists is happy to discuss an at-home skincare plan with you.

Can you get Dysport while pregnant?

No. It is recommended that you do not start or continue using anti-wrinkle injections while pregnant. There are not enough studies to negate any potential risks that it may cause.

Can you get Dysport while breastfeeding?

No. There is a rare but possible chance that an anti-wrinkle injection substance could enter your bloodstream and affect your baby. For this reason, it is recommended that you avoid injectables while pregnant and breastfeeding.

Does it Hurt?

One of the reasons that anti-wrinkle injections are so popular is because they are relatively pain-free. Most patients report feeling a slight pinch at the injection site, but you shouldn’t feel any ongoing pain.

Will it be obvious that I have had Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

This is something many women want to know before considering injectables. The reason for the immense popularity of anti-wrinkle injections is that when done right, the results are natural-looking and hard to detect.

Our registered nurse Sarah Treadwell is a master of subtlety and always takes a gentle approach. Generally, no one notices the treatment, but you’re likely to be complimented on looking ‘fresher’ and less tired – go you!

Can I get Anti-Wrinkle Injections during my lunch hour?

The short answer is yes, you can! Dysport injections are quick. After your initial consultation, the treatment takes around 15 minutes, with minimal discomfort. We remove your makeup from the injection site and recommend leaving the injected area clean and makeup-free for at least two hours after your treatment.

What are the side effects?

With any anti-wrinkle injection, there is the possibility of side effects. However, these are most commonly very minimal and range from a mild headache to subtle bruising and or welting at the injection site.

In rare cases, a more severe complication may occur. These will all be discussed in full at your consultation before your treatment.
